Couple killed in explosion at home

DADELDHURA, March 31: A couple got killed and two persons were injured in a bomb explosion at a house in Katoujpani-2, Baitadi Saturday morning. Dan Singh Bhat, 50, of Katoujpani-2, Badiya and his 43-year-old wife Lalmati were killed, while Dan Singh´s daughter Draupadi and sister-in-law Kamala, 36, were injured in the explosion that occurred at around 11:30 in the morning.[break] Police said the explosion occurred when Lalmati handled a “pressure-cooker bomb” while cleaning her house on the occasion of Chaite Dashain. “Apparently, the bomb was left behind by Maoists while staying at the house during the conflict period,” said Krishna Malla, inspector at the District Police Office, Baitadi. The police said a team from Shrikot Police Post that is around two hours trek from the site of explosion left for the place immediately after the news of explosion. “Some parts of the victim´s body were blown over 500 meters away by the powerful explosion and the two-storey house has been totally destroyed,” Malla added. The injured are being treated at the Baitadi District Hospital. The police said around a year ago they had disposed two bombs found in a neighboring house. According to the police, they carried out searches at other houses in the vicinity looking for other bombs as Maoists used to organize various programs in the village during the insurgency. There have been incidences of explosion and discovery of improvised bombs in Maoist-affected areas in Far West. Six months ago, a child had died while another person got injured when a bomb exploded in a house in Basuling Village Development Committee (VDC) of Baitadi. Likewise, an elderly was killed when a bomb went off in Dadeldhura district around two years ago. Also, the police and Nepal Army have disposed bombs in over a dozen places.
